Playful Pawtraits

My Playful Pawtraits are vibrant and colourful mixed media pet portraits, from a photograph of your choice.

This portrait style is all about experimenting with bold watercolours, soft pastels, and fine pencil detailing - layering varying mediums together to create a uniquely stylised portrait, while maintaining the detail and character of your beloved pet.

This is Wil.

His owners really wanted to make sure his striking eyes were captured in Wil’s portrait, and so they opted for a Playful Pawtrait.

Black fur is always interesting when creating - you might not realise it, but black is the absolute LAST colour I added to Wil’s portrait! For much of the process, Wil was made up of bright blue and purple watercolours, before eventually adding a little black, mostly in the form of pastel. The vibrancy of the initial painting helps to capture the stunning undertones within Wil’s coat.

Wil is a beautiful Border Collie that I have had the pleasure of getting to know during my monthly appearances at the Leek Sunday Supplement Market.

This was such a special project to work on - the lovely lady who commissioned this piece sent me lots of photos of her three pups, but noted that the photo of the three together was her favourite. And I can see why it was her favourite!

I loved the peachy tones that the three shared, so I made sure to translate that into the painting. I added a light purple wash to help really make them glow.

This is Lofty.

Lofty’s owner wanted their portrait to loosely match some other paintings she had had done of her previous dogs. She showed me photos of the prior portraits and I combined my Playful Pawtrait style with the background style from the previous artworks

I continue to draw inspiration from this coloured background with my latest Playful Pawtraits!

Lofty’s undertone painting featured soft pinks and olives, to lend to those beautiful brindle stripes.
